Workshop/Webinar: Rare Earth Element’s Recovery by Crystallisation Techniques – 29 August 2024

August 29 @ 2:30 pm 3:30 pm

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Kerstin Forsberg from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, will be delivering a workshop/webinar on “Rare Earth Element’s Recovery by Crystallisation Techniques” on 29 August 2024. The event will take place in Richard Ward (Room 334) and will be conducted in a hybrid format. Attendance is mandatory for all members of our research group, and we encourage others in the university community to participate as well.

Abstract:

“A rising demand coupled with a scarcity of supply makes some of the REE identified as critical raw materials in many parts of the world. There is a need to develop more sustainable and competitive processes for REE extraction from primary and secondary resources. An important step is the precipitation of REE salts, which should be designed to obtain crystals of high quality in terms of crystal size, size distribution and purity. Antisolvent crystallization is a promising technique to obtain rare earth salts with high yield and of high quality. In this talk key aspects in the design of REE antisolvent crystallization processes for obtaining crystals of high quality will be presented. Examples will include crystallization of scandium compounds in the processing of red mud and crystallization of REE sulphates in the recycling of magnet waste. Possibilities to control the precipitation process to avoid impurity incorporation will be presented. The findings can be applied to other crystallization processes where there is a need to recover REE salts of high quality.”
