SIMMET concludes 2023 with first paper-based PhD

The SIMMET Research Group 2023 cohort.

Following its last bi-weekly Talk&Tell seminar for 2023 on Friday 24 November, the SIMMET Research Group concluded the academic year with a year-end braai to celebrate its achievements.

Among its achievements this year, PhD student Samaneh Teimouri became the Wits School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering’s first student to submit a PhD based on journal papers she wrote about her research. Titled “Extracting metals from secondary resources using various reagents”, Teimouri’s thesis comprises 7 journal papers that studied various aspects of mineral preparation such as pyrite breakdown to prepare ore for mineral extraction. Her work is particularly relevant to secondary extraction such as extracting gold from mine tailings containing pyrite, as the locked gold cannot be extracted by traditional cyanide processing.
